frequently asked questions

Before you come to your first Pilates session, have a read of popular FAQs below - we aim to ensure your time with us is safe, fun and fulfilling.

Q. What should I wear?
A. Comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily but still allows your Pilates teacher to see your form.  Please avoid wearing any zippers or studs as these can be uncomfortable for you and damage our mats and equipment.

Please ensure your feet and socks are clean, Pilates is not performed in shoes.  Note, socks are compulsory for all equipment sessions.

Q. Does it matter than I am not very flexible?
A. Not at all, in fact the less flexible you are the more you need Pilates.  The exercises and routines are designed as such that muscles will lengthen and strengthen as required over time, you just need to get started!

Q. Can I just come to one class to try it out?
A. Pilates is a progressive method which requires you to learn the basic principles before you can enter any of our on going classes.  All new people are best to start with a Beginners Introductory so they can master the principles in an effective and safe environment.

Q. Do I still have to do a Beginners Introductory if I have done Pilates in the past?
A. Provided you have previous experience with a certified Pilates Teacher it is possible you can by-pass our Beginners Introductory and join into our strength based classes.  If it has been some time since you last participated in Pilates you may want to consider doing a private session to refresh first.  Please contact us to discuss your options.

Q. Is Pilates just for women?
A. Absolutely not, men are more than welcome! Ironically Pilates was created by a man by the name of Joseph Pilates who was a professional boxer and gymnast and rehabilitated soldiers using his methods during World War 1.  It wasn't until he moved to New York and began working with dancers and the rich and famous did it become popular among women.  We have designed a specific Mens Only Programme called ManGo which is run by our male instructor - Nick Mannix.  Many of our other Pilates classes have men included too so this is definitely not just a womens game!  We aim to provide a comfortable, non-threatening environment for all to enjoy.

Q. How often do I need to do Pilates?
A. You can do it as often as you like!  However at Personal Pilates we like to encourage people to attend our sessions as a complimentary to other forms of fitness in order to achieve a well-balanced healthy lifestyle so many of our clients only attend once (some twice) a week and see great results.

Q. What kind of results can I expect and when?
A. Pilates is more than just exercise, it's a gradual improvement of your well being which ultimately has a big impact on the way you look and feel.

From day one you will begin to notice changes.  You will have more awareness of your body and how this impacts on your posture.  From this point, it's a continual journey working to reverse the effects of  poor postural habits and improving strength, tone and flexibility.

'In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 you will see the difference and in 30 you will be on your way to having a whole new body.'
Joseph Pilates.
